BACKGROUND
Even though the Khmer language class has been held long before at the Cambodian Temple in New Carrolton, Maryland, the cultural program was officially organized in 1990 at the Silver Spring location by introducing Khmer dance and Khmer music.
In search of a dance teacher upon request from the most Venerable Oung Mean Candavanno, Dr. Sovan Tun called upon Dance Master Peou Khatna to conduct the program. As a member of the Royal Ballet of Cambodia and a recipient of the National Endowment of Arts Award, Dance Master rallied all dance teachers in the area, including her own daughter Sin Ny, to help the dance program grow by leaps and bounds. Music Master Chum Ngek joined the music program in 1994. The dance and music classes were opened at the start wit 24 students, and 25 years later, CBSCC is teaching over 70 students.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Students who register for CBSCC classes participate in the CBSCC’s Cultural Show, which is the main highlight of the Cambodian New Year Festival. Every Sunday from September to June, CBSCC provides four cultural classes dance, music, language, and dharmma lessons for interested individuals to experience and participate in Cambodian culture. The program is run by 100% volunteers who are passionate about maintaining and sharing the Cambodian culture to surrounding population. The program serves as an on-going community building activity throughout the year for local Cambodian Americans and guests interested in learning more about a culture rooted in thousands of years of history and dangerously close to being irreparably destroyed during the country’s civil war.
